New Builds - Q1 Stats
Ireland’s construction sector continues to strengthen, with the latest data from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage showing a significant rise in new home commencements in early 2026.
A total of 8,408 new homes were commenced in Q1 2026, representing a 184% increase compared to the same period in 2025. In March alone, 2,939 homes were started, up 293% year-on-year, highlighting strong and sustained momentum in residential construction.

If 2024’s exceptional levy-driven figures are excluded, Q1 2026 marks the highest level of housing commencements on record.
Strong Long-Term Growth Trend
The latest figures build on consistent growth across recent years, with 85,723 homes commenced in 2024–2025, a 43% increase compared to 2022–2023.
The latest AIB Construction PMI survey showed residential construction activity growing for a second consecutive month.
Where Homes Are Being Built
Of March’s total commencements:
- 55% were scheme dwellings (1,635 units)
- 32% were apartments (932 units)
- 13% were single homes (372 units)

Dublin remains the most active region, accounting for 43% of all new commencements in March, led by Fingal, South Dublin, and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.
Government Response
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, welcomed the figures, stating that increased delivery across both public and private sectors is essential to meet housing targets under the Housing Action Plan – Delivering Homes, Building Communities.
